Uganda has reiterated its dedication to diplomacy and regional peacebuilding following a bilateral meeting between John Mulimba, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Regional Affairs), and Seddiki Nafaa, ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to Uganda.
The meeting, held in Kampala, focused on promoting regional stability, multilateral cooperation, and the peaceful resolution of protracted conflicts across Africa.
Amb Nafaa congratulated President-elect Museveni and the Ugandan people on the peaceful conclusion of the recent general elections, praising Uganda’s longstanding stability and its cordial relations with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
During discussions, Ambassador Nafaa briefed Minister Mulimba on ongoing deliberations at the United Nations Security Council regarding the Sahrawi question and the peace process with Morocco.
He highlighted Sahrawi’s commitment to a negotiated settlement while raising concerns about recent developments that have strained existing ceasefire agreements.
The ambassador also sought Uganda’s support for Sahrawi’s candidature to the African Union Peace and Security Council ahead of upcoming elections.
In response, Mulimba emphasized Uganda’s foreign policy principles of peaceful coexistence, non-alignment, regional integration, and the promotion of African-led solutions to African challenges.
He reaffirmed Uganda’s historical engagement with the Sahrawi leadership and underscored the country’s support for inclusive diplomatic negotiations involving both regional and international actors to foster a durable and legitimate resolution.
“Uganda remains a constructive partner in advancing peace, security, and cooperation, consistent with our role as a responsible actor in regional and global affairs,” the minister said.
The meeting underscored Uganda’s belief that sustainable peace in Africa can only be achieved through dialogue, multilateral cooperation, and collective responsibility—principles that continue to guide its engagement across the continent and within the global community.
